The Substitution of the Semantic Symbol “Mu” in Phonetic Variant Characters of Song Ben YuPian

在《玉篇》形声异体字中,"木"作为义符经常遭到换用。换用方向,整体上分为从相同角度和不同角度提示字义两类。换用原因,主要缘于义符"木"表意的提示性和语义的演变、构字语义的转化、构字所指事物的发展以及古人的造字思维。义符"木"在"木制品"类形声字中大量的换用,也造成其自身表意能力的弱化。

In the phonetic variant characters of YuPian,the semantic symbol of 'Mu'is frequently substituted.The substitution of semantic symbols falls generally into two categories,namely promoting word meaning from the same perspective and promoting word meaning from different perspectives,with several sub-categories behind both. Such replacement can be attributed to the change of semantic meaning and ideographical expression,the evolution of word formation,the change of the signified entities and the thinking mode of ancient people in creating characters. Moreover,frequent use of the semantic symbol 'Mu'in pictophmetic characters of woodware weakened its ideographic function.
