Witnessing the Declining Prosperity with Tears Streaming Down His Face——A Study on David Der-wei Wang's Research

王德威作为美国汉学界第三代学人的代表,是美国汉学的集大成者。他对中国现当代文学的研究,呈现出推崇抒情色彩、带有比较文学的视野、重文轻史、关注地缘又超越时空的特点。这些特质有其对前代学人夏志清的继承,也有对夏志清的超越和不同。同时,他的论述因为过多地强调西方文论、缺乏"在地"体验而存在缺憾。这与其地域身份、教育背景和所在的语境有着极大的关系,也是其作为学人的特殊性所在。

As the representative of the third generation of sinology in the US,David Der-wei Wang epitomizes the American sinology. In his research of modern and contemporary Chinese literature,he praises highly of the lyricism in a horizon of comparative literature and values literature over history,while he also attaches importance to territory beyond time and space. These characteristics show that he receives an influence from the research of Xia Zhiqing,while he surpasses Xia in making his own contribution. In the meanwhile,his overemphasis of western literary theory and his lack of native experience made some regrettable imperfections in his research. This could be attributed to his identity,educational background and experience of his growing society,which make his uniqueness.
