An Exploration of the “Eyes” Image and Its Intertextuality in “The Hollow Men”

T.S.艾略特的代表作《空心人》围绕"空心人"塑造了众多的意象,而"眼睛"意象作为理解空心人的关键,不仅具有显在与隐在的存在形式,更是同康拉德的《黑暗的心》与但丁的《神曲》两个文本在许多地方有着互文性关联。眼睛既是周遭他者的代表,也是空心人自身视角的象征,诗歌中眼睛的失明显示了信仰的缺失,而眼睛的重现是空心人得以前进的希望。艾略特借此也隐喻现代社会的堕落,对现代性的罪恶予以警示。

T.S. Eliot's magnum opus The Hollow Men has shaped a wide range of images based on the hollow man. The image of eye,as the key to understand the hollow men,has not only appeared on and the existence of hidden in the form,but also with Conrad's Heart of Darkness,the Dante's Divine Comedy associated with intertextuality in many places. "Eyes"is a representative of the others of the surroundings and the symbol of hollow man's own perspective. Those blind eyes in poetry show a lack of faith,and the reappearance of the "eyes"is the hollow man's hope to move forward. Eliot has also implied to the depravity of modern society,and warns against the evil of modernity.
