Berdyaev pointed out in his book The Russian Idea that the Messianic spirit and Eschatology are the foundation ofRussian thought. He held that Russia's socialism,nihilism and anarchism are all manifestations of the Messianic spirit from the 19 th century to the beginning of the 20 th century. Russia's road and destiny can only be the presence of Eschatology. Berdyaev'sinsight reminds us that the religious consciousness is the key to understand Russia in history and at present.
