《史记索隐》是"《史记》三家注"之一,是现存唐代以前《史记》注本成就最高者。它通过不同版本之间、不同章节之间以及不同文献之间的对比,对《史记》中的衍文、讹文、脱文、倒文等都有精当的校勘,对保证《史记》内容的纯粹性、正确性有重要作用。它也保存了大量唐代以前的《史记》版本异文,对了解唐代以前的《史记》版本面貌和流变有独特的意义。

Among the three annotations of Shih Chi before the Tang Dynasty, the book Annotations of Shih Chi is supposed to be the highest achievement. Through a contrastive collation of the derivative works, the extorted copies, the lost and the false parts in the different editions, the book plays its important role in ensuring the purity and correctness of Shih Chi. Besides, it significantly preserves a variety of versions of Shih Chi prior to the Tang Dynasty.
