After a brief introduction to the origin of American English, the paper discourses upon the fogyism and innovation of American English vocabulary. Seemingly two opposite tendencies, they root in American particular social environment and the adaptation of language to social intercourse and are in fact complementary to each other. An analysis of the fogyism and innovation of American English vocabulary will undoubtedly help to better understand and express American English, enrich the knowledge on English language and improve the ability to employ English.
