What the author refers to as the“Grand Temple”is today’s area to the south of Beima Road and to the east of Xinanhe in Zhifu District. In his early memories, the pan-Grand Temple area was an area with strongest business atmosphere and cultural profundity in Yantai. From the names of the streets such as Mianshi(Flour Market)Street,Caishi(Vegetable Market)Street and Xinglong(Prosperous)Street, you can get a glimpse of the atmosphere of the commercial center. The Grand Temple was demolished in 1974 during the Cultural Revolution and replaced by Yantai Mass Art Museum. The antique market and flower-and-bird market were established in some spare spaces. The markets were thronged every day with a hubbub of voices and a great flow of visitors.Nowadays,a skyscraper is to be erected in the old site of the Grand Temple and only a small stage in the south remains.Beida Street, the street that symbolized the beginning of commerce in Yantai, has become a humble alley in the tide of the era.Nevertheless, people still vaguely remember old Yantai, old Yantai streets, old Beima Road, old Grand Temple and the spiritual home of old Yantai people a long time ago.
