李德懋选择诗作,特别注重诗人品行对诗品所发挥的重要作用,认为诗文是作者才、气、学、习的自然外现。与此同时,他十分注重时代环境与写作背景对诗歌创作的影响,注重诗作所反映的社会现状。

When he makes comments on poetry, Yi Tong-mu tends to select those which are influenced by the poet's noble character, and considers that a poem is the natural reflection of its author's talent, temperament, learning and practice. In the meantime, he pays much attention to the effect of the social setting upon the poem and to the social reality reflected by the poem.
