A Sociolinguistic Study of Linguistic Arbitrariness

The present study attempts to examine the issue of linguistic arbitrariness by adopting a sociolinguistic perspective. There are six parts in this essay. We start the research with a brief introduction. Then, we move on and introduce Saussure's views on this issue. To further illustrate this feature of language system, the language game analogy put forward by Wittgenstein is discussed as well in the third part. Part Four and Part Five concern with other two major frameworks in the treatment of the question, with particular reference made to the theories suggested by Russell and Ogden & Richards. Part Six ends the paper by providing some further discussion in this respect.
