From the angle of enlightenment modernity, Ding ling's short story When I Was in the Xia Village continued the enlightenment tradition of the May 4th Movement, presenting a very important motif of an individual's freedom on choosing one's marriage. But the surface 'revolution' narrative concealed this motif in this story: 'revolution' interrupted 'enlightenment'. Generally speaking, 'revolution' was not always contradicted with 'enlightenment'. But in this story, the author obviously agreed that 'revolution' did contradict with 'enlightenment'. This resulted in its intrinsic paradox in structure and narrative, making it embrace more meaning than 'revolution' only.
