Background and development history of Artificial Life are introduced. C.Langton's definition, domain and method of ALife are presented. Key concept of Self-emerge is discussed. C.Langton's main points of view are concluded and some commentary is given. Important Alife achievements are summed up. It is believed that the outcome from ALife study stands a good chance of engineering application.
