Ordinary peasant families of the Wu kingdom either have their own farm land or land rented from the government and pay rents or taxes to the local authorities in terms of rice, cloth money, etc. Members such as guards, postmen, messengers and the like of standing armed forces, copper smiths who have no or litde land, handicrafts men like tanners, poor students pursuing their studies away from home, and people who had lost their land and houses and lived in exile, now become peasants again are organized into garrison troops or peasant communities to open up wasteland and grow food grain. These people have also to pay tax rice as prescribed for diem, which are even higher than the taxes and rents put together paid by ordinary fanners or tenants.
