刘向的《新序》一直被世人认为是一部很有价值的、对当世和后人也很有借鉴意义的著作。从思想上说,它劝谏人君要对人民宽厚仁爱、劝谏人君广纳贤才并强调了诚信的重要意义;在文学价值方面,它提供了几个创作方面的技巧,这是当代经常使用的方法;在文献学方面,它在目录学和版本学上有其不可忽视的作用。

New Preface by Liu Xiang has been regarded as a valuable work from which the later generations can draw lessons. Regarding its ideology, it proposed that emperors should be tolerant and benevolent towards people, and they should also recruit well-qualified talents to a great extent. The importance of honesty was also greatly emphasized in this book. Regarding the book's literary value, it provided a few literary creative skills which are frequently employed in the modern times. Regarding philology of the book, it played a role which can't be neglected in bibliography and bibliology.
