In the history of modern Chinese literature, Lin Yutang gave a high status to women in his novels. His writing style was influenced by various factors. The first is the influence from western feminism and western mainstream culture. The second is western education which caused Lin to beautify everything in ancient China, including the dross. The last is his discrimination against women in his novels as he was a man writer after all. So to speak, his concept of women was not a right one, as the women characters in his novels were ones portrayed in the light of men s desire.
