This article gived a general view of the professional development of the Optical Engineering Department, Zhejiang University in the recent 50 years. According to the current status of subject and industry as well as the developing tendency, we put forward some suggestions of professional cultivation, esp. in the Optical & Electronic Engineering Department of Zhejiang Univeristy in the 21st Century.
