Forest certification is a means of protecting forests by promoting responsible forestry practices. Forest certification provides an independent third-party assurance that a forestry operation meets standards set by a certification program.Forest certification is expanding rapidly during the past decade. In January 2002 the area of certified forest was estimated at 109 million hectares.
