On Interpretation of Relevance Theory in Reading Comprehension

本文阐述了关联理论对阅读理解的解释.根据关联理论,阅读理解是一个明示--推理的动态认知过程,读者从作者明示的交际行为中寻找最佳关联性,而一旦找到关联,则能够理解文章的暗含意义.文章同时指出它对跨文化语言交际的阅读理解过程中所出现的最佳关联赖以存在的文化缺省现象的解释显得力不从心,因为它无法解决读者建构起由缺省的文化来填充的认知图式问题.

This paper analyses the interpretation of relevance theory on reading comprehension. According to relevance theory, reading comprehension is an ostensive inferential and dynamic process. The reader looks for the optimal relevance from the writer's ostensive communicative behavior. On getting it, the reader is able to understand the implicature. But the theory fails to give an adequate explanation on account of its incompetence on showing how to solve the problem of cultural default, a problem in a cross cultural language communication, from which optimal relevance generates.
