Integrated yet Different: Hu Shi and Qian Xiantong in the Modern Times of China

在中国近代思想史上,胡适与钱玄同的关系颇为引人瞩目。从总体上看,二人同属学术民主、思想自由式人物;但从各自的性格及其对待问题的态度看,胡适更温和、理性一些,而钱玄同则表现出激进、学理性不足的一面;胡适著作等身,思想自成一体,钱玄同多短篇散论,思想跌宕起伏,但却往往振聋发聩。胡适与钱玄同的交往和思想,从某一个方面反映了中国近代思想文化史发展前进的足迹。

In the history of the modern times' China, the relationship between Hu Shi and Qian Xiantong is quite attractive. Generally speaking, both of them are those who maintain academic democracy and freedom in thought. However, in terms of personality and the attitude when dealing with questions, Hu Shi is more moderate and rational while Qian Xiantong is more aggressive and is not adequately rational. Hu is prolific with unique thought patterns while Qian has more short comments with ideas unconstrained yet shocking. In a sense, the communication and the different thoughts between them is a reflection of the trace of the development of the Chinese culture and thought in modern times of China.
