On Mao Zedong's View about Chinese and Western Cultures

文化冲突是政治冲突的先导。近代中国社会面临的问题是传统与现代、中国与西方的矛盾，解决这两对矛盾就成了近代中国的重要课题。毛泽东在近代长达百年的中西文化论战的广阔历史背景下，回答并解决了这两对矛盾，提出了自己的中西文化观，这对于改革开放和发展市场经济的现代中国如何正确地对待西方文化和中国的传统文化，具有重大的理论意义和现实意义。

Cultural conflict is forerunner of political conflict. What modern Chinese society was facing were the contradictions between tradition and modernity, and China and the west. To resolve the two contradictions was an important issue for modern China. Under the background of nearly one hundred years of debate on Chinese and western cultures, Mao Zedong answered and resolved the issue and put forwards his own view on Chinese and western cultures. It has important theoretical and realistic significance for modern China in reform and opening to correctly treat Chinese and western cultures.
