Poetry translation: Hu Shi's vehicle for emotions

胡适的诗歌创作带有明显的“理胜于情”的倾向,而他的诗歌翻译则常常是“情胜于理”。重理轻情虽然在“五四”白话诗初期带有普遍性,但胡适的文学理念、他个人的情感波折和经历,以及当时特定的社会文化氛围是形成创作与翻译一理一情对峙的根本原因。

Poems written by Hu Shi are more rational than emotional while the poems translated by him are more emotional than rational. Rationality is typical of the verses written around the period of May 4th movement, but the fundamental reasons for the sharp contrast in the rationality and emotion between poems written and translated lie in Hu Shi' s literary notions, his personal experience in marriage and love, and in the historical background at that time.
