This thesis analyzes the conflict between the spirit of Apollo and Dionysus in Eugene O' Neill' s Desire under the Elms, and reveals the brave and fearless revolt of human beings against the old traditions and principles. The tragedy mirrors the necessary demand of social development and the progress of the times through Dionysus' solemn and stirring victory. And Dionysus,the wild rebel in the violent self-destruction, obtains the greatest happiness and the significance that transcends tragedy in the return to the primitive nature.
