格尔木市位于柴达木盆地,自然资源得天独厚,市场潜力巨大,是西部资源开发的中心。格尔木市具有特殊的地理位置和交通区位优势,是西部交通中枢。格尔木市地缘环境、人文环境独特.它的开发建设对发展少数民族地区经济、缩小地区差异、稳定边疆、巩固国防具有深远意义。本文用中心地理论和地缘政治理论探讨了格尔木市在西部资源开发、交通建设、边疆建设中具有不可替代的作用。分析了格尔木市具有建成中国西部现代化中心城市的条件,确立了格尔木市在西部开发中的战略地位。

Geermu city is located in Qaidamu basin. It will become one of center area to exploit resources in westen China because of abundant resources and large potential market. It will be one of hub of communication in westen China with superior traffic location and special geography location. To development and construction of Geermu city has a very significan meaning in development area economy of nationalities and strengthen national defense because of particular culture and geography environment. This chapter studies the Geermu city has not a substitute for role in westen China exploit resources, traffic construction and strengthen national defense with theory of centre area and theory of geopolitics. This chapter analyses reasons that Geermu city will be constructed a modern center city and certilies the center city role in development western China.
