白马湖作家群的文化个性从整体上来看是建设性的。和时代"以破为立"的主流思维方式不同,白马湖作家群的努力方向,并不在于反思、批判文化传统(或西方文化)的好坏得失,而主要通过他们扎实的文化工作,从正面向青年学生灌输一种新的文化理念与知识。这种建设性的文化个性与他们以人为中心的文化理念紧密相关,并使其在中西方文化的处理问题上,显示出了兼容并包的风度意气。

On the whole, the cultural identities of the Baima Lake writers were constructive. Different from the then dominant practice of 'establishment by destruction,' they indoctrinated the young scholars with a new cultural idea and sense originated from their solid studies rather than reflecting and criticizing the merits or defects of the Western cultures. This attitude reveales the close combination of their cultural identities with their idea of human centeredness and demonstrated their liberal spirit facing the issues of Sino-Western cultures.
