On Relevance-blending of Metaphor

以关联理论和概念复合理论为基础 ,探讨了隐喻的动态关联复合模式。隐喻不仅仅是从源域到目标域的简单映射 ,而是在适当的认知语境下多个心智空间互相映射的在线关联复合过程。隐喻的使用过程就是寻求最佳关联 ,改善认知环境的过程。该模式能较好地解释隐喻的理解过程及其产生动因。

Based on conceptual blending theory (CBT) and relevance theory (RT), this paper discusses a hybrid model, i.e. the relevance-blending model (RBM) for metaphor interpretation. The writer argues that metaphor is not merely a set of mappings between a source domain and a target domain, rather, it is an on-line relevance-blending process which involves mappings among multiple mental spaces within proper cognitive contexts. The use of metaphor is to search for optimal relevance and thus improve one's cognitive environments. This model can better explicate the comprehension and motivation of metaphor.
