Tou E, the heroine in Guan Han-qing's play Injustice to Tou E, is typical of ancient Chinese women who lived under feudal oppression and were treated unjustly. The immediate cause of Tou E's tragedy was corruption among officials in feudal society. But the close connection between feudal ethics with 'filial piety' as the core and popular religious belief in 'heaven and earth' and in ghosts and gods, and the fatalistic pattern (i.e. good is rewarded with good and evil with evil ) in national psychology lie the deep cultural implications of Tou E's tragedy.
