Literary Evidence Against Taiwan "Modernization" Under Japanese Colonization

宣扬“脱亚入欧”和“大亚细亚主义”的日本殖民者曾将其殖民扩张美化为“文明的义战”,宣称日本的统治将使台湾民众“从地狱来到乐园”,当前某些人也不断鼓吹日本带给台湾“现代化”的论调。日据时期台湾新文学以现实主义的描写撕破这一谎言:法律苛严和贪赃枉法令台湾民众饱受欺凌;殖民经济导致台湾农民破产;“皇民化运动”则难以更改台湾人民固守的中华传统文化和民族身份认同。

The Japanese colonists advocating ' Leaving Asia and Joining Europe' and ' Great Asianism' sugared up their colonization expansion as ' a civilizing war of justice' , and alleged that their rule in Taiwan would take pepole in Taiwan from 'hell to Eden' . Some are still drumming for the view that Japan brought modernization to Taiwan. The literature of Taiwan during Japanese colonial rule tore that lie apart with realistic descriptions: Legal cruelty, bribery and pervertibility brought insult to pepole in Taiwan; colonial economy led Taiwan peasants to bankruptcy; 'Japanization campaigns' hardly changed the inherent Chinese cultural traditions and national identity of the people.
