For a long period of time, the traditional realist concept of security, which overemphasizes national security with military security at its core, has been dominant in international politics. However, over the last two decades it has been confronted by various challenges. This essay attempts to critically review the traditional concept of security from a gender perspective.First,by referring to the women's security predicament as the little mermaid's disadvantageous situation,it brings to light the biased viewpoints of the realist concept of security and women's security issues from a gender angle. Then it offers a feminist interpretation of the concepts of security and peace, focusing on the significance of human security and women's security. Finally ,the essay sheds some light on the relations between traditional and non-traditional security issues and the redefinition of international politics.
