Brief Analysis of the High Quality of Xiang Army's Military Leading Group

湘军之所以能够打败太平军,重要原因之一在于拥有一个综合素质较高的领导集团。其领导成员不仅能够以恢复封建统治秩序,并成就个人功名事业为奋斗目标;能够共同维护集团的根本利益,形成团队精神;而且在军事与经济战略决策上具有比较深刻的认识与比较正确的决断;其主要成员在行为作风上也能做出表率。这一切都显示了儒学内圣外王思想以及阶级斗争实践对他们的深刻影响。

One of the most important reasons of Xiang Army defeating Taiping Army was that Xiang Army had a high-quality leading group. The army leaders set it as a goal to restore the feudal ruling order and to achieve, at the same time, personal fame and position by accomplishing the cause. Being United as one and keeping team spirit, they could all uphold the fundamental interests of the organization. In addition, they had comparatively deep awareness and could make a proper decision in military and economic strategy adopting. The leading members also set an example in the way of practice. All this showed that they were deeply influenced not only by the class struggle practice but by Confusianism and its moral concepts.
