The happy endings of the novels about gifted scholars and beauties are mainly reflected in two aspects: one is love and marriage, the other is success in the imperial examination and official career, which reflected the literati’s ideal of their life in feudal society. The gifted scholars had to consolidate their marriage by success in the imperial examination. So taking part in the imperial examination and choosing an official career almost became the only goal for the literati.
