AspenTech, a US supplier of software and services to the process industries, recently announced it has been awarded a contract to supply a series of operator training simulatorsfor the US$4.3 billion Nanhai Petrochemicals Project of CNOOC-Shell Petrochemical Company (CSPC) atDaya Bay in Huizhou City in South China's Guangdong Province. Under the contract, AspenTech willdevelop seven sets of Virtual Plant Simulators (VPS) for all key units in the petrochemical complex, including olefins, pygas, butadiene, styrene, monomer, propylene oxide, ethyl benzene and ethyleneoxide. The simulators use modeling software to provide a comprehensive dynamic model of thefacilities that accurately mirrors the behavior of the plant. The VPS models will be used foroperator training before start-up and then for refresher training and operations improvement. Theuse of simulators will help ensure the safe and efficient renning of the new plants, by enablingoperators to experience a full range of operating scenarios before the plant is put intocommissioning.
