The reaction of ClMe 2SiSiMe 2Cl in turn with indenyllithium and cyclopentadienyllithium afforded (1-C 9H 7)~Me 2SiSiMe 2C 5H 5. The latter reacted subsequently with Fe(CO) 5 giving the Si—Si bond-bridged indenyl and cyclopentadienyl complex [η 5,η 5-(1-C 9H 6)Me 2SiSiMe 2C 5H 4]Fe 2(CO) 4 (2). Complex 2 underwent the rearrangement reaction under thermal conditions to give a product Me 2Si(η 5-1-C 9H 6)Fe(CO) 2SiMe 2(η 5-C 5H 4)Fe(CO) 2 (3) through metathesis of the Si—Si and Fe—Fe bonds. The molecular structures of 2 and 3 have been determined by X-ray diffraction methods.
