On the western bank of the Lishui River, near ancient Chongxian County, there are several irons-casting workshop sites, with iron objects scattered around. The unearthed artifacts from the two excavated sites include workshop tools such as furnace implements, crucibles and molds, other tools of production, weapons and daily utensils. It can be concluded that these workshops might have been runned by the Chongxian County government of the Han Dynasty.
Archaeological data demonstrate that the Sangzhi area was a district where the Pu people inhabited. By the Han Dynasty, they formed into the Pu nationality with the population increased rapidly, iron objects spread widely and agriculture developed greatly. To strengthen their domination over this minority nationality, the Han court established Chongxian County near the seat of present-day Sangzhi County. They built irons-casting workshops to manufacture weapons and agricultural tools.
The unearthed irons show strong ethnical characteristics and local style, and provide reliable material data for further exploring the seat of ancient Chongxian County and researching into the origin of the Tujia nationality. They are significant to studying politics, economy, military affairs and folklore of the Han period in the upper valley of the Lishui River.
