Moby-Dick,one of the greatest classics in American literature, is simply too large a book to be contained within one consistent consciousness subject to the laws of identity and physical plausibility. The novel has always been challenging a reader to a simple,definite,all-encompassing guideline to direct his reading and offering the fertile soil for different interpretations with its depth and dimensions in its saliently paradoxical themes and symbols. The author of this paper holds that the book is still meaningful today with its philosophical, critical, religious reflection of a tragic Herman Melville in his speculation on the dilemma of western civilization in general and American civilization in particular of the nineteenth century.
