Hypotaxis Vs. Parataxis: Implications for Translation —Review and Reflections

一般认为英语是形合语言,汉语是意合语言,翻译过程中需对译文中的衔接关系作适当的调整。但是,文献中对形合、意合的概念界定不严,对如何调整衔接关系的认识更加模糊。鉴此,本文对相关研究进行综述,梳理了基本概念与论断,并进一步提出若干问题引发学术界继续讨论。

This paper summarizes the researches in and elaborates on the notions of hypotaxis/explicitness and parataxis/implicitness, characteristic respectively of the English and Chinese languages, as well as its implications for translation between them. It challenges certain earlier findings and concludes with earnest callings for further researches.
