汉族先民及其周邻民族,曾在不同历史时期对古代汉族有过不同的指称,诸如夏人、秦人、汉人、唐人、宋人、明人和华夏等。汉族先民随着多民族中国的历史发展,一直作为历史上多民族中国的主体民族而不断发展壮大。汉族先民在自己的发展历史上,依照相继建立的中央王朝的国名,有着不同的循国号而称自称或他称。我们根据民族形成的一般规律,通过汉族先民循国号而称的族名,可以窥测到古代汉族的发展壮大历程。
