Hedging is an important linguistic phenomenon, which expersses uncertainty, tentativeness and possibility. This paper investigates hedges in academic discourse from the perspective of interpersonal function. Based on the analysis of research articles in famous English medical joumals, it finds that academic writers employ them to express so;iteness,attitude of negotiation and self-protection, etc.
