摘要
田纳西·威廉斯通过自己的"南方人"视角,在作品中刻画了一系列具有典型南方特性的男性人物,从而展示了成长与生活在20世纪上半期的美国南方绅士各自所经历的非男性化、非人化和物化的现象,并阐发了现代物质文明对于人的异化主题。这是处于历史交替时期的南方人在物质崇拜和精神空虚挤压下所必然承受的命运,也表现了威廉斯对于南方旧文化的眷恋、反思和批判。
By portraying a series of male characters from the point of view of a southerner, Tennessee Williams has probed into the demasculinization, dehumanization and materialization of American southern gentlemen in the early half of the 20th century and thus expounded the theme of human being's alienation. The alienation is not only the inevitable fate facing southerners at the historical turn when they were under the dual pressures of material worship and spiritual barrenness, but also suggests the playwright's nostalgia, reflections and criticisms of traditional southern culture.
