Wallace Stevens, one of the five major American modern poets in the early 20th century, contributed to pondering and exploring the function and meaning of the poetry in people's life using the poetry itself as medium. By means of deep retrospective, the poet emphasized his own philosophical thinking upon his unique 'Reality-imagination complex.' Stevens' world of life is a modern fairy tale produced by the interdependence between reality and imagination, just as what Stevens himself said, that is,'an exceptional view of the public dump and advertising signs while dwelling in an ivory tower'. This thesis analyzes some representative poems written by Stevens, in an attempt to probe the relationship between reality and imagination, discover how the poetry reflects the actual world in which the poet lives.
