DEVELOPMENT OF A SCOTTISH-BASED CENTRE OF EXPERTISE IN TELLIGENT HABITAT RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT, DESIGN, DEMONSTRATION AND DISSEMINATION

Element 1. Research, Development, Demonstration and Dissemination of issues or aggregates of Human Habitat (activities currently sponsored by the SDA). The pupose of the first element of this paper is to disseminate the reasoning behind, and the thrust of , a 'Research Programme' seed funded by a consortium headed by the Scottish Develop- ment Agency (SDA). As part of the SDA sponsored work, a 'Centre of Expertise' to serve the Scottish Community is being assembled. This Centre will investigate criteria requirements for hu- man comfort design, develop practices and equipment for the adequate ergonomic and economic control of automated work environments, and provide and impartial resource for the dissemina- tion of new built environment related technology to people, commerce and industry. This exam- ple in Research stresses the visual environment. Element 2. Educational Curriculum Development and Implementation on the issues of Habitat (activities formerly sponsored by the University of Washington). The purpose of the second element of this paper is to elucidate the Educational 'a', 'b',&'c' lev- el curriculum philosophy which can be applied to any discipline-whether that be in the Sciences, Engineering, or the Arts. The curriculum pattern utilises, to a maximum extent, resources of u- nique expertise which cannot readily be recruited from any institution of released from the Private Sector for long periods of time. It also facilitates the shared employment by several deucational institutions of valuable, but specialised, personnel. This example stresses Terrestrial concerns but indicates a format for Extra-terrestrial studies. The details of this format, however, connot be elaborated at this time.
