Writing research is a very pragmatic branch of modern linguistic study, which can be traced back to a deep origin in ancient rhetoric. The author has made an approach to the exploration of the close interrelationship among writing, from ancient rhetoric to the rhetorical study in the middle ages, the Scottish influence and the 'new rhetoric' in the United States, with a definite purpose to emphasize the great significance of rhetoric to writing research as well as its function to act as a rich resource for possible development in this area, thus practically offering a different perspective on the research of writing theories and pedagogies.
