1840年鸦片战争爆发,面对列强的侵略,林则徐和魏源分别发出了学习西方先进科技以挽救国家危亡的呼声———“师敌之长技以制敌”和“师夷长技以制夷”,这是中国近现代史上“科学救国”的先声这种在一定时代背景下产生的爱国主义思潮,对推动中国社会进步曾起过十分重要的作用。
