My Humble Opinion on the “Two-Way Interaction between Confucianism and Contemporary Society”

儒学与当代社会的双向互动是指儒学与当代社会的双向审视、双向批判、双向参与。这一问题对儒学言 ,是能否在当代社会生存与发展和如何生存与发展的问题 ,对当代社会言 ,是如何汲取儒家的智慧走向人文化成的问题。双向互动不是封闭的静态系统 ,而是动态的开放系统 ,重不在互动的效果 ,而是互动的过程。儒学借助与当代社会的互动而焕发出新的生命与活力 ,当代社会因儒学的参与而更加健全、完善。

By “two-way interaction between Confucianism and contemporary society”, we refer to the factthat Confucianism and contemporary society contemplate, criticize, and participate in, each other. For Confucianism on one hand, this involves whether it is able to subsist and develop itself in contemporary society, and how it proceeds to achieve that. For contemporary society on the other, this means in what way it should absorb the wisdom embodied in Confucianism so as to develop its own culture. The so-called “two-way interaction” does not refer to a closed and static system, but a dynamic and open one, with stresses on the interaction process instead of its results. By way of this interaction with contemporary society, Confucianism will give forth its fresh life and energy. And with the participation of Confucianism, contemporary society will become the healthier and the more perfect.
