In The Glass Menagerie Tennessee Williams successfully created a new plastic theatre to take the place of the exhausted theatre of realistic conventions. Through the careful study of the play's imagery construction, the perfect combination of expressionism and symbolism in stage devices, as well as its metrical speech patterns, this essay attempts to explore the poetic qualities of The Glass Menagerie and demonstrate that Williams is not only a great drama innovator but a true poet of the theatre.
