In the novel The Temptations of Big Bear, written by Rudy Wiebe, one of the most brilliant and respected writers in Canada, many ceremonial and ritual occasions were described, where rules of speech were specified clearly, such as what one could say to whom in what circumstances to achieve what effects. The rules of speech determined the hierarchical relationship between social groups and provided a protective context for authoritative languages. The hero of the novel Big Bear advocated a way of surviving by struggling against the verbal - ideological level and in a non - violent way. This article analyzed how Big Bear overturned those ceremonial rules; how he turned the ceremonies into carnivals; and how he turned himself from an insignificant speaker into a dominant one.
