On the basis of Tang Lan's earlier theories, the author discusses the meaning of the character '服' as seen in the recently discovered inscription on the bronze Shi Shan pan, and argues that the term was roughly equivalent to the concept of zhi-gong as used in two ancient texts - Zuo zhuan and Guoyu, and that it specifically embraced the concepts of both zhishi and gongfu. The author points out that a character to designate a particular small state in the inscription on the Sbi Shan pan was also similar to the character '眉' that appears in the term '眉敖' in inscriptions on bronzes. In conclusion the author argues that the inscription on the Shi Shan pan throws light on the politics of the period of King Gong of the Western Zhou and on the system of ritual dress in the pre-Qin period.
