The image of liquid moonlight appeared in Chinese literature well before the height of Tang Dynasty, but such metaphorical image did not significantly increase in kind and variety until the mid and late Tang Dynasty; ever since then, it has been an established image in Chinese literature. This image rises from the association of the Moon and water by early Chinese. From the ancient time to the late Tang Dynasty, the diction of such description includes ‘flow’, ‘spill’, ‘full’, ‘golden wave’, ‘moonlight wave’, ‘water-like’, ‘wet’, ‘soak’, ‘wash’ , ‘shimmering water’, etc. Other images closely associated with the Moon are ‘toad’, ‘dew’ and ‘Moon fluid’.
