Objective To investigate the relationship between the levels of aldose reductase(AR) mRNA in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and the peripheral neuropathy in type 2 diabetic patients. Methods The levels of AR mRNA in PBMC was determined by RT-PCR, and the nerve conduction velocity (NCV) in the calf nerve was measured. A total of 32 patients with type 2 diabetes and 35 normal controls were studied. The diabetic patients were divided into 2 groups patients with normal NCV and those with delayed NCV. Results AR mRNA levels in PBMC of type 2 diabetic patients was significantly higher than those of normal controls (0.59±0.56 vs 0.30±0.11, P=0.003). There was no significant difference in AR mRNA levels between two groups of diabetics. Conclusion Type 2 diabetic patients have a significantly higher expression of AR mRNA in PBMC than that in normal controls, but that is not related to the presence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
