This paper compares the women characters in Anderson's Death in the Woods and Porter's The Jilting of Granny Weatherall so as to explore the causes of their tragedies.The paper reveals that the awakening of women's self-awareness as' .a human being' is the only way to escape finally from adversity and become their own masters in the male-dominated society.
