北伐期间包括南京事件在内的反教暴力事件接踵发生。但有关史料表明 ,在华基督教会的受损程度 ,远没有当时中外媒体渲染的那么严重。迄今有关直鲁联军溃勇制造南京事件的指控证据不足。事实表明 ,参与暴力劫杀事件的主要是北伐军士兵。至于有关共产党人是事件主谋的指控 ,是蒋介石及其控制的军方的一面之词 ,至今亦未找到相关的确凿依据。

Anti-Christian violence, such as the Nanjing Incident, was frequent during the Northern Expedition (1926-1927). However, historical records reveal wide spread exaggeration in both domestic and foreign media about the actual damage to Christian churches in China. Charges that the routed troops of the Zhili and Shandong allies were responsible for the Nanjing Incident have not been adequately proved. The incident was in fact conducted mainly by soldiers from the Northern Expeditionary Army. The accusation against the CPC for planning it was fabricated by Chiang Kai-shek and the military under his control.
