In the transition time from the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, Zhang Jian, devoted himself to charities of Nantong, set up institutions like hospitals, rest homes, invalid homes , prostitute reform houses, and factories for people in poverty. To initiate the charities in Nantong, Zhang Jian learnt from Westerners modestly, raised money from all possible sources and based himself in Nantong practicing autonomy. It took Zhang Jian a great deal of money and energy to do so. What he did for Nantong's charities acquired good social effects and the approval of the common people.
